1972 – BSc (Hons) Chemistry, University of St. Andrews, Scotland

1980 – PhD (Gas Kinetics), University of St. Andrews, Scotland



Ian has experience in many facets of industry, having entered R&D (in 1975) in the Petrochemicals & Plastics industry in both UK and South Africa, and then serving time in technical sales and marketing before joining South African Breweries as an internal consultant in 1991. Ian’s responsibilities included packaging, quality assurance and a primary function in World Class Manufacturing.¬† As leader of the World Class Manufacturing (WCM) program at SAB’s pilot site, Ian enjoyed extensive practical experience in the successful implementation of the techniques described in the MDW¬ģ program.

Ian has studied World-Class principles both in South Africa and Japan, and has been a regular speaker on the subject at conferences, training programs and Business Schools.  The success of the World-Class pilot program in South Africa has resulted in the successful roll-out of the principles to many other sites, both inside and outside the country, and has been the subject of a number of published studies at conferences and in the press.

Ian is now a director of Competitive Dynamics International AMA Operations, an organization committed to taking World-Best Practices to the front line, and has introduced the program to manufacturing, service and mining companies in every continent of the world.
